Wenge (Millettia spp.) is an African wood found in the southern regions of Tanzania and Mozambique. It's heartwood is dark brown to almost black with alternate layers of lighter and darker graining, which runs fairly straight. It's texture is rather coarse.
It is somewhat difficult to cut and machine and a rapid dulling of cutting edges occurs. It turns well, but can be difficult to glue if resinous and not prepared for gluing adequetly. It is used in parquet and strip flooring, woodcrafts and specialty items and for decorative veneer.
