Teak (Tectona Grandis) is an Asian wood primarily found in India, Burma, Thailand, Indo-China, and Indonesia. The heartwood varies from a yellow brown to a rich brown, but may show some dark streaking. The color of Teak becomes more uniform within a relatively short amount of time. It is a somewhat coarse textured wood with a fairly straight grain. It has an oily feel.

Teak is rated as very durable with respect to decay and insect attack and this is one reason why it used so often in watercraft and outdoor furniture. It works with moderate ease with hand and machine tools, but the high concentration of silica in the heartwood can quickly dull woodworking tools and cutting edges.

It can be finished and glued satisfactorily, but does require some surface preparation beforehand to ensure that the oily compounds do not prevent proper adhesion. Teak does not cause rust or corrosion when in contact with metal and is yet another reason why it is so often used in the shipbuilding and watercraft industry. It is also used in furniture, decorative items, and veneers.
