Mahogany
There are many different trade and species names associated with Mahogany, including; African, Benin, Cuban, Honduras, Philippine, Santos, Senegal and more. Honduras Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) is the primary source of "genuine mahogany" for furniture makers.
African mahogany (Khaya spp.) and Santos Mahogany (Myroxylon balsamum) are mahoganies that closely resemble Honduras Mahogany. Philippine mahogany (Shorea spp.) - also sold as "Meranti", "Lauan" (or "Luan"), "Seraya", "Balau", and "Bangkirai" - are technically not mahoganies at all and are generally more open grained and lighter in color.
